"Conservatives came to office to reduce the size of government and enlarge the sphere of free and private initiative," said Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona. "But lately, we have increased government in order to stay in office."
Indeed! The problem is not that Bush is to "conservative", but that he is not conservative ENOUGH! The Dems are running to the center (to their right) to win some of the voters who have become frustrated with Bush’s "big government" compromise. But can we believe these "conservative" Democrats are for real? I doubt it.
One could argue this calls for a 3rd party, but we’ve already experience Perot in ’92 and it split the conservatives allowing Clinton to become president with only 39% of the vote! We’ll have to continue to force BOTH parties to fight for the center. Eventually the Left will become frustrated with a "centrist" Democrat Party and split off a liberal 3rd party.
In the meantime, we’re doomed to 50-50% elections as far as the eye can see because NEITHER party can bring itself to a consensus on a position unique to their base and yet capable of capturing the center. …but face it; it ain’t pretty but it works.
